The Toyota Corolla is now a compact, but started life as a subcompact in1987. After a decade the model was equipped with two side airbags and a comparatively roomy interior for the segment, though power remained low through 2002. The next generation was produced until 2008, and even base models had AC and a CD player. One trim line, the XRS offered a 164 HP inline-four, while the rest had a 136 HP engine. Side curtain airbags and stability control were also added. Since 2009 Corollas have an updated exterior with increased width and corresponding cabin space. There is no Hybrid option yet, so mileage is only 30 MPG combined, and a 0-60 time of 6.7 seconds.
