The Nissan Maxima has always been a compact or midsize model slotted between the Sentra and Maxima. It launched in the U.S. in 1993 as a four-door sedan, with a 150 HP engine and either a manual or automatic transition. Trim lines included the XE, GXE and sporty SE with fog lights, bucket seats and four-wheel disc brakes, until 1997. Beginning in 1998, the Maxima came with airbags, a passthrough on the rear seats, and optional leather seats and sporty gearing and side airbags, though power remained at 155 HP. A variety of transmissions were available in the 3rd generation from 2002-2006, with power ranging from 175-260 HP, and it was more spacious than a Maxima. The 4th generation got a 10 HP uptick in the V6, and now had a continuously variable transmission for better fuel economy, as well as interior updates and a hybrid from 2007 to 2001. The 2013 changes included a higher fuel economy of up to 38 MPG, and some seven different trim lines as well as styling updates that mimic the new Lexus lines.
