The year was 1963, and the need was a convertible. With my savings a new car was out of the question. I'd looked for a used car all summer and I was advised as autumn approached the market for used convertibles went down.

I found my dream car - a 1955 Chevy Bel Air convertible. In the Fifties there were very few foreign cars, and the American carmakers made drastic changes in model styles almost every year. Chevy had changed the profile of their ‘55 models to a lower profile, adding a new front suspension, rear springs and improved brakes. The roof lines were lowered and sleeker. It was a more modern look, and I loved the new egg crate grill.

The 8,000 miles on the odometer was low for eight years old. The owner told me it was only driven in the summer and I believed him, because when I went to his home to see the car he had two other sedans.

General Motors called the colors India ivory & turquoise, with a matching interior. The engine was a V8, 265 cubic inches (4.3-liter), with a two-barrel carburetor. My mechanic did a few tests, including a compression test, and said it was dependable. We carefully checked out the lines and seams (door, hood and truck) and they lined up perfectly, which made us believe the car was never in a major accident. The tires also appeared to match the odometer reading.

I plunked down my $400 dollars, put down the top and drove off. I was in seventh heaven. Now that I had the car, I felt the need for speed. My first move was to replace the two-speed automatic Powerglide transmission with a manual four-speed and a Hurst floor shift. Still wanting more speed, I changed out the factory two-barrel carburetor-barrel carburetor for a Holley four-barrel.

It was now time to see how my modification stacked up against others. There was a strip only a mile from my home. It was a new road that wasn’t patrolled by the police yet because it wasn’t used, and only blocked off with wooden saw horse. It was straight and about ¾ three-quarters of a mile long, without any stores or homes - the perfect drag strip. The racing started at midnight. The saw horse was moved, and one car was placed blocking the only side road and ¼ a quarter-mile was marked off with chalk.

The usual bet was $10. My challenge came from the owner of from a ‘57 Chevy which had a bigger engine, but which had and an automatic transmission - which I felt gave me an advantage in a ¼ quarter-mile mile race. I won by a nose. Over the next few weeks I won most of the challenges I accepted.

Now I wanted to make some modest changes to the look.

I took my winnings and went to a body shop for a “nose and deck” treatment, where the chrome would be taken off the hood and trunk, leaving just the key slot. It gave the car a sharp, clean look.

The one thing I would change? I would never have sold it.
